Jan 22, Anirudh rated it it was ok. This book was gifted to me by a friend and so I read my first Sidney Sheldon.

I had expected much from such a well known author but as with many famous books, I found this more hyped than it deserves. Though the story spans a years and intrigues the reader in the beginning, the simple writing style soon ruins it. I do not mind if the narration is straight forward, but in this book the narration was so simple it could have been a 6th grade text book had it not been for the adult content.

Full This book was gifted to me by a friend and so I read my first Sidney Sheldon. Full stops dominate commas in almost every page. Conjunctions and passive speech will find no asylum here. The only thing I could truly appreciate in this book was the stealing of the diamonds. Mixed feelings. Audiobook narrator needs improvement. The book is broken into four parts - the lives of different generations in the family. He goes to South Africa to find diamonds. Kate does evil things and permanently harms her son Tony. The fourth part was about Eve and Alexandria - identical twins.

That was the most troubling. I was depressed reading this part Mixed feelings. I was depressed reading this part. Eve is an evil sociopath. She tries many times to kill her twin and harm others. She lies and is always believed.

Too one-dimensional to be interesting. I did not like reading about Alexandria who was stupid because she never suspected Eve was trying to harm or lie to her. And I want justice in the end. I was angry and depressed. Sexual content: Several sex scenes occur and a couple sadist-rape scenes occur but they are referred to, no details shown. DATA: Narrative mode: 3rd person. She wants what i Actually I got this book from my Aunt, she loves reading Sidney Sheldon novels and the book itself is old, hmm I love those old books..

She wants what is best for her family to handle their family business though her son wants to be an artist. So mean.. It's pretty a long story of flashback to the present the parts wherein how did her family became rich. I like also the twist here, but I couldn't help being annoyed at the main character, she's powerful and rich, but a very manipulative lady. She doesn't want to lose at any game.. She'll find every way to win. She's one intelligent woman.

About ten pages into this book I was reminded of a time when the book publishing world was full of these kinds of sprawling, multi-generational sagas that were just begging to be made into television mini-series events. I had read some of those books, but I'd never read any by Sidney Sheldon. This book was compulsively readable, especially the first half, with its descriptions of diamond-fever in South Africa, and its larger-than-life characters. By the second half, I was usually a step ahead, a About ten pages into this book I was reminded of a time when the book publishing world was full of these kinds of sprawling, multi-generational sagas that were just begging to be made into television mini-series events.

By the second half, I was usually a step ahead, and I could see the "shocking" twists before they were revealed. Also, if I think too much about some of the plot devices, I can see several holes in logic as well as behaviors that don't seem to really reflect the way most people would rationally behave. But these kinds of books are not really meant to be thoughfully pondered, they are meant to be devoured.

And I did that. I just kept reading, because I wanted to know how it all turned out. Not highbrow storytelling, by any means, but I can understand why Sidney Sheldon made buckets of money in his time. Thanks for the recommendation, Leti. Jun 11, Manugw rated it really liked it. All humans passions and emotions are found in this story, greed, fear, lust, love, jealousy, sex, life and death.

Seldon is a great storyteller and the plot progresses at a very fast pace. I can only criticize that his style is to make some events very contrived for the sake of the story and to fit them snugly in the chapters. Also, I see that the author help his characters too much resorting to a last ace under "his" sleeve, to overcome miraculously, extremely difficult situations. On the other hand ingenious twists and turns galore. Overall, the goal is to entertain readers and for that purpose Master of the Game is a great job.

Oct 24, Alessandra Torre rated it really liked it. Picked up this book at a used bookstore somewhere - hadn't read Sidney Sheldon in a while. The storyline of this book was amazing - twists and turns, action and deceit, through five generations of one family. You know how in every freaking writing class out there, the teacher harps on you 'not to tell things, but show them". This book is a lot of telling. It almost has to be, because the author's trying to fit so damn much in one book.

I would have preferred to see this book as five separate nove Picked up this book at a used bookstore somewhere - hadn't read Sidney Sheldon in a while. I would have preferred to see this book as five separate novels, one for each generation. That would have stretched out my pleasure, and giving these characters and stories the development and depth that they deserved.

Yes, some of these characters are despicable or weak.

Her conception w Have to get out of this book!!! Jul 14, Sarah Kayes rated it liked it. I'll start with why I liked this book: It opens with Kate Blackwell's 90th birthday party then swings back years to how the family's story all began. By end of the four page prologue addressing just her 90th birthday party, I was hooked. How did Kate end up where she was with the issues she eluded to while thinking of her life? I had to know how it all played out. Well done, Mr. Not a chapter went by where I wasn't dying to at least know what came next, how the character would get o I'll start with why I liked this book: It opens with Kate Blackwell's 90th birthday party then swings back years to how the family's story all began.

I finished this page book in three days staying up late just to find this out. Aside from that Of course it was published in the early 80s so that might explain it. I couldn't find one character I liked nor could root for. Their emotions were superficial at best and I could relate to not one of them. Yet I still had to find out how they pulled through. The amount of disbelief this novel required me to suspend was painful.

And in order for some of the characters to carry out their dastardly deeds, the others had to become conveniently stupid undermining their supposed world-conglomerate-creating talents. Oh well. Sorry for the mixed review. There's so much about this book I didn't like but hey, I have to give credit where credit is due. Sydney Sheldon definitely gives the reader a ride. • I don't know what's wrong with me but I just feel like rating all the books I read when I was in 8th grade or so. This was my first real novel actually. I'd read only kid stuff from libraries before this;books that we got from the school library. Funny story of how I read this book: I was bored and there was nothing on the TV that could keep me interested so I just started going through my cousin's books and stuff.

I came across this and opened a random chapter and started reading it. The chapte I don't know what's wrong with me but I just feel like rating all the books I read when I was in 8th grade or so. The chapter I opened had a scene where a guy and a girl have sex or are going to have sex. I don't really remember. So being the kid that I was, I said, "Hey, it's like an adult book and I should read something that is not meant for my age. I didn't bother reading the starting I don't know how many chapters. What I really remember now is that I thought Sidney Sheldon was a female and was surprised to find out otherwise when I read his other book years later.

When I've tried his other work, I've always felt disappointed, but the sheer scope of this saga is enthralling. Many of the characters have a surprising roundness and complexity. This isn't great literature by a long shot, but any book that can still delight and surprise me after a quarter of a century easily deserves four stars.
